Samuel John Lean was born in Devonport, Devon in December 1862. He joined the Royal Navy as a Shipwright in October 1892. Lean advanced to Carpenter’s Mate in October 1897, and served with H.M.S. Pelorus, July 1899 - June 1901 (awarded L.S. & G.C. in December 1904). He advanced to Chief Shipwright in August 1914, and served with H.M.S. Amphitrite during the Great War. Lean was ‘Invalided’, 7 June 1915.
