George Benjamin Dale was born in Devonport, Devon in June 1887. He joined the Royal Navy as Boy 2nd Class in September 1902. Dale served with H.M.S. Diana, October 1904 - November 1906 and November 1908 - February 1911. Having advanced to Able Seaman, his service during the Great War included at H.M.S. Defiance and with H.M.S. New Zealand, 16 September 1917 - 10 March 1919. During the latter dates she was present at the battles of Dogger Bank, Jutland and the Second Battle of Heligoland Bight.

Dale transferred to the Royal Fleet Reserve in March 1919, and was ‘Shore Pensioned’ in December 1927. He re-engaged for service during the Second War, and served at H.M.S.
Defiance, 1939-41.
