James Young resided at Meadowfield, Corstorphine, Edinburgh. He served as a Second Lieutenant with the 1/6th Battalion, Royal Scots (T.F.) in the Egyptian theatre of war from 6 September 1915. Young was seconded as an Assistant Instructor at an Infantry School in June 1918, and advanced to Acting Captain in October 1918.
