South Africa 1834-53 (Qr. Mr. Chas. Daines, 74th Regt.) light contact marks and minor edge bruises, otherwise very fine £400-£460

Charles Daines was born at Ipswich, Suffolk, on 5 November 1803, and enlisted into the 10th Foot on 2 June 1823, rising through the ranks to become Sergeant in April 1825, and Sergeant-Major in October 1835. He was promoted to Quarter-Master in the 10th Foot on 24 September 1841, and exchanged in the same rank to the 26th Foot on 2 April 1847, and to the 74th Foot on 15 February 1850. The 74th Foot arrived at the Cape in March 1851, landing at Algoa Bay before marching to Grahams Town. Daines was in ‘action in the Amatolas 26th and operations of the 27 & 28th June 1851,’ and in the ‘Operations 2nd July 1851.’ After service at the Cape, he went with the regiment to India from November 1853 until August 1854. He retired on half-pay on 26 May 1856, and was afterwards a ‘beerhouse keeper’ at The Crown, South Benfleet, Essex. Sold with copied Statement of Services which notes ‘Granted a Silver Medal for Service in the Kaffir War inscribed “South Africa 1853”.’
