Three: Stoker 1st Class J. Bates, Royal Navy

East and West Africa 1887-1900, 1 clasp, Benin 1897 (J. Bates, Sto., H.M.S. Theseus.) partially officially corrected; British War and Victory Medals (175371 J. Bates. Sto. 1 R.N.) traces of verdigris to last, minor edge bruising, therefore very fine (3) £180-£220

James Bates was born in Birlin, Kent in July 1874. He joined the Royal Navy as Stoker 2nd Class in July 1893. Subsequent service included in H.M.S. Theseus, January 1896 - July 1897 (papers give ‘Invalided Haslar’). Bates advanced to Stoker 1st Class, and his service during the Great War included at H.M.S. Wallington (Auxiliary Patrol Base, Barton-on-Humber). He was demobilised, 20 February 1919.
