Patrick Kavanagh, of the Royal Fleet Auxiliary Steamship Petroleum, was awarded the Norwegian Medal for Heroic Deeds, along with other members of his crew, ‘in recognition of their services to the distressed crew of the Norwegian barque Chala, which was abandoned in the North Atlantic Ocean on the night of 15-16 January 1914’.
