South Africa 1834-53 (Josh. Henry. 73rd Regt.) brooch marks to reverse, suspension re-fixed, fine £200-£260

Joseph Henry was born in the Parish of St Peters, Athlone, County Roscommon, and attested for the 73rd Foot at Athlone on 21 June 1842, aged 18, a labourer by trade. He served a total of 21 years 118 days, including 8 months in South America, and 10 years 11 months at the Cape of Good Hope. He took part in the Kaffir Wars of 1846-47 and 1850-53, and was discharged at Colchester, Free with Pension, on 16 October 1863. His conduct was very good and he was in possession of four good conduct badges, good conduct medal and Gratuity of £5, and Kaffir War Medal. Sold with a 73rd Foot pewter tunic button salvaged from the wreck of the Birkenhead and copied service papers.
