Samuel Richard James Hillier was born in Stoke Newington, London in November 1887. He joined the Royal Navy as Boy 2nd Class in January 1903. Hillier advanced to Leading Signalman in September 1907, and to Yeoman of Signals in February 1914. Service during the Great War included in H.M.S. Blenheim, 1 April 1914 - 30 June 1916. Hillier advanced to Regulating Petty Officer in May 1919, and to Master at Arms in August 1923. He was Shore Pensioned in November 1927.
