Patrick Byrne was born in Dublin and enlisted into the 2/24th Foot 20 September 1870. He volunteered for the 58th Foot on 30 September 1872 and served in India from March 1784 to December 1878, and afterwards in South Africa from February to 29 June 1879. He was not with the regiment during the Transvaal campaign of 1880-81, and was medically discharged on 29 June 1882.
