Three: Private William Garwood, Royal Marines

Crimea 1854-56, 2 clasps, Sebastopol, Azoff (Willm. Gawood R.M.) contemporary but somewhat crude engraved naming, note spelling of surname; China 1857-60, 2 clasps, Canton 1857, Pekin 1860, unnamed; Turkish Crimea, Sardinian issue, unnamed and fitted with ‘China’ type suspension, the first with edge bruising and contact marks, good fine, otherwise better than very fine (3) £400-£460

William Garwood was born at Bockley, Suffolk in June 1835 and attested for the Royal Marines on 16 June 1854, No. 93 Company. He served aboard Cracker in the Sea of Azoff, which ship received 26 medals with this clasp, including 3 Royal Marines. Able Seaman David Barry uniquely won two Conspicuous Gallantry Medals while serving in Cracker, the first at Kinburn, in the Black Sea, and a second in the Sea of Azoff.
