Arthur Harwood was born in 1894, and was the son of Mr and Mrs H. Harwood of Orchard Place, Arundel, Sussex. He enlisted in the East Kent Regiment, 26 August 1914, and served with the 6th (Service) Battalion in the French theatre of war from 1 June 1915. Harwood subsequently advanced to Sergeant and transferred to the 4th Battalion. He transferred to the Army Reserve, 10 April 1919.

James Harwood was the younger brother of the above. He served during the Great War with the 1/4th Battalion, Royal Sussex Regiment in the Gallipoli theatre of war from 8 August 1915. Harwood advanced to Sergeant and moved with the Battalion to France. He was killed in action on the Western Front, 28 September 1918, and is buried in the Wulverghem-Lindenhoek Road Military Cemetery, Belgium.
