William Barker was a native of Oldham, and served with the Manchester Regiment Mounted Infantry during the Second Boer War. He served during the Great War with the 2nd Battalion, Manchester Regiment in the French theatre of war from 8 October 1914. Barker subsequently transferred to the 11th (Service) Battalion, and it was for gallant service with them that he was awarded the M.M.
