William Marshall Ward was the son of Mr and Mrs D. A. Ward of 15 Birchfield Place, Gildersome, Leeds. He served during the Great War with the 1st Battalion, King’s Own Scottish Borderers in the Gallipoli theatre of war from 16 August 1915. The Battalion was withdrawn from the Dardanelles in January 1916, and moved to the French theatre of war in April of the same year. The Battalion served as part of the 87th Brigade, 29th Division on the Somme, July - November 1916.

Ward advanced to Sergeant, and was killed in action during the Battle of Langemarck, 16 August 1917. Company Quarter Master Sergeant W. Grimbaldeston of the same Battalion was to be awarded the Victoria Cross for his gallantry on the later date. Sergeant Ward is commemorated on the Tyne Cot Memorial, Zonnebeke, Belgium.
