A French ‘Controles chez les orfèvres, 1677-1789’ medal, the modern silver uniface medal by Christofle, with French control marks in concentric circles around central inscription, signed to the reverse, diameter 76mm. £150-£200

The central inscription reads: “Les permiers generaux charges sous l’ancien regime de percevoir les impots employalent pour leurs controles chez les orfevres des plaques dites dinsculpation de poincon similaires a celle ci.” - The first persons charged under the old system with collecting taxes employed for their control of the goldsmiths the so-called punctum-stamping plates similar to this one.
