Medals Related to Sports, Ireland, Boxing: Tailteann Games, 1928, a silver-gilt award medal by the Irish Jewellery Co, coronetted female bust left, rev. Celtic strapwork circlet bearing the arms of the four provinces of Ireland, centre engraved (Boxing First), hallmarked Dublin 1928, 51mm. Very fine (£30-40)

The Tailteann Games, involving athletic and artistic competition, had their origin in the Oenach Tailten of pre-Christian Ireland, an annual week-long assembly in August at Teltown, co. Meath, when racing and athletic contests took place. The games were revived as an ‘Irish Olympiad’ in 1924, with further contests in 1928 and 1932 that attracted many competitors from overseas. However, due to financial difficulties, the games were then discontinued
