19th Century, Cornwall, Falmouth, Burton’s Old Curiosity Shop, brass check, c.1890, restamped from Japanese brass Sen (J & V K 602), legend, rev. KNOWN THROUGHOUT THE CIVILIZED WORLD, etc, edge plain, 29mm (Pridmore, SNC 1961, pp.6-7; Mayne/Williams 2; cf. DNW 52, 1457). About very fine, scarce (£30-40)

John Burton (1840-1907) first set up in business in Falmouth market in 1862. In 1882 he moved to the site in Market street which became known as Burton’s Curiosity Shop, where he enjoyed the patronage of the Prince of Wales (later Edward VII).
