Andreas Hofer (1767-1810), patriot and soldier from St Leonhard in the Tyrol, became the self-styled leader of the Tyrolean peasants after the Peace of Presburg. Betrayed after the insurrection was quelled, Hofer was shot in Mantua on the direct orders of Napoleon
