Charles II (1660-1685), Pattern Crown, 1662, in silver, by J. Roettiers, right facing undraped laureate bust similar to that used for the five guineas, rev. cruciform shields with star of the Garter in centre and interlinked cs in angles, edge decvs et tvtamen *+*, 29.75g/6h (L & S 2; ESC 68). Obverse nearly very fine, reverse good very fine, excessively rare; only three examples believed known outside of institutional collections (£4,000-5,000)

This was the design submitted by John Roettiers to the competition held in 1662. Thomas Simon was unable to prepare a design in time but produced his Petition crown the following year in an attempt to reverse the King’s decision to appoint Roettiers as engraver. Roettiers did not sign his entry but his monogram appears as ‘an extra curl’ on certain crowns of 1662 and 1663 (see ESC 20 and 27).

Scrutiny of the illustrations of the Lingford and Wakley specimens suggests they are different pieces. The Mackerell specimen was acquired by the British Museum in 1905
