H.M.S. Lion, Flagship of Vice-Admiral Sir David Beatty, suffered a direct hit on ‘Q’ turret early in the action. A posthumous Victoria Cross was awarded to Major Hervey, R.M.L.I., who despite being mortally wounded gave the order to flood the magazine and thereby saved the battle cruiser from blowing up.
