An official replacement Boer War D.C.M. and Great War Dated Bar awarded to Sergeant A. Macdonald, King’s Own Yorkshire Light Infantry, late Hampshire Regiment, killed in action in October 1914

Distinguished Conduct Medal, V.R., with Second Award Bar dated ‘19th OCTOBER 1914’ (6923 Sjt. A. Macdonald, 2 K.O.Y.L.I.) good very fine £900-1200

D.C.M. London Gazette 27 September 1901: Drummer, 2/Hampshire Regiment.

Bar to D.C.M.
London Gazette 16 December 1914: Sergeant, 2/King’s Own Yorkshire Light Infantry “For conspicuous gallantry on 19th October, near Illes, in carrying a message under fore, and also for coming up twice to the firing line to search for, and bring away, the wounded under very heavy fire.”

Sergeant Macdonald was killed in action on 28 October, 1914. As a regular soldier it is highly likely that his original D.C.M. and Boer War medals were lost when he was killed, necessitating the issue of a relacement D.C.M. on the award of his bar.
