Edwin Ovington was born on 16 November 1881 and enlisted into the 7th Hussars at Aldershot in July 1900. In December 1916 he attended the Student Bandmasters Course at Kneller Hall where he qualified on the Trombone and Violincello, passing the War Office Examination for Bandmasters in April 1918. He was appointed Warrant Officer 1st Class Bandmaster to the 1st battalion West Riding Regiment on 19 May 1919, and served as their Bandmaster until he retired on pension in July 1934, after thirty four years service. He was awarded the M.S.M. with annuity on 1 July 1947.
