R.F.A.); King’s South Africa 1901-02, 2 clasps (Bomb., R.F.A.); 1914 Star, with Mons bar (Sjt., R.F.A.); British War and Victory Medals (Capt.); Army L.S. & G.C., G.V.R. (Sjt., R.F.A.) the first two with contact marks, nearly very fine or better (6) £120-140

William Robert Payne was born on 13 May, 1881. He enlisted in 1897 and served in the ranks of the Royal Field Artillery for 19 years, 168 days, including 1 year, 142 days as a warrant officer. His commission was gazetted on 18 August, 1916, ‘to be 2nd Lieutenant for services in the Field: Battery Serjt-Major William Robert Payne’. He was promoted Lieutenant on 19 January 1918, and briefly held the rank of Acting Captain, 8-30 September 1917.
