Gunner Henry Manning was born at Chirton-Fitz-Payat, near Crediton, Devon in 1869. He first joined the Royal Artillery November 1887, he was tried and convicted of desertion in October 1892 and imprisoned; posted to the West Indies January 1893 and South Africa November 1897, served throughout the Boer War before being discharged at Cape Town in November 1902 after completion of twelve years service. Sold with copied service papers.
