Lieutenant J. W. Callaghan is confirmed as one of three officers and 23 men of the Alexandria Mounted Rifles to be issued the South Africa medal, all with clasp 1877-78. A further 16 medals to this unit were returned to the Mint unclaimed. See also Lot 415 for medals awarded to his son.
