Edward William Hargreaves Johnston served during the Second World War as a Navigator with 207 Squadron, joining with his crew directly from 1661 Conversion Unit on 26 December 1943. He flew his first operational sortie on 29 December 1943, a raid on the ‘Big City’, Berlin, as part of the Battle of Berlin, and in January 1944 carried out two further raids on Berlin, and a raid on Stettin.

Johnston was killed in action when Lancaster DV191, piloted by Flight Officer G. W. James, was shot down by a night-fighter and crashed over Bakede, north of Hameln, whilst on a bombing raid to Brunswick, on 14-15 January 1944. Five of the crew baled out and were taken prisoner of War, but Johnston and the pilot James were killed.

Johnston is buried in Hanover War Cemetery, Germany. His medals were sent to his mother, Mrs. Mary Johnston.
