James Richard Harrison Hodges was born in Portsmouth on 18 October 1908, and joined the Royal Navy as a Boy 2nd Class in the telegraphy branch on 1 February 1924. By the outbreak of war in 1939 he was rated Petty Officer Telegraphist, becoming Temporary Chief Petty Officer Telegraphist in September 1943 and confirmed in that rate in April 1945. He was mentioned in despatches for services aboard H.M.S. Scarborough, in which ship he served for two years from September 1942. He was awarded the L.S. & G.C. medal on 16 November 1941, and presented with the bar on 25 April 1957. He was shore pensioned on 25 November 1957.
