Edgar Hool Jepson was born in Leeds, Yorkshire in June 1880 and entered the Royal Navy as an Acting Electrician 4th Class in March 1902. He subsequently witnessed active service aboard H.M.S. Hyacinth in the Somaliland operations of 1903-04, and again aboard the armoured cruiser Devonshire from August 1914 until July 1916.
