Queen’s South Africa 1899-1902, 1 clasp, Relief of Ladysmith (5542. Cpl. F. Oldfield, R: Lanc: Regt.) rank neatly re-engraved, traces of restoration work to retaining rod, good very fine £180-£220

Fred Oldfield attested for the King’s Own Royal Lancashire Regiment, and served as a Lance Corporal with the 2nd Battalion in South Africa during the Boer War. He was wounded in action at Spion Kop on 24 January 1900, where the regiment suffered 3 officers and 55 men either killed in action or died of wounds, and was invalided home on 22 April 1900. ‘When he collapsed riddle with bullets he was attended by Queen Victoria’s own surgeon. “He told me I was a dead man... but I proved them all wrong”, says Fred, still going strong 80 years later at the age of 104.’ (article in the Sunday People, 13 April 1980 refers).

Sold with copied research and a photographic image of the recipient aged 104.
