Alexander Jane Donaldson Smellie was born in July 1875, and commissioned Temporary Lieutenant in the Liverpool Regiment, 8 October 1914. He served during the Great War with the 14th (Service) Battalion, Liverpool Regiment in the French theatre of war from 4 September 1915.
