Francis Joslyn Grice was born at Bengal in 1887, the son of James and Elizabeth Grice. He was a member of the Mussoorie Rifle Volunteers before serving in the Punjab Volunteer Maxim Gun Company, No. 4 Section, in East Africa during the Great War.

Grice was subsequently employed with the Survey of India, and served with them in the Third Afghan War. He is later recorded as Extra Assistant Superintendent, Survey of India, Assam, at the time of the award of his Silver Jubilee Medal in 1935. He died in Worthing, Sussex, in 1966.
