Henry Buckell was born in December 1883, and joined the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve in London. He was posted for service with the Government Pigeon Service, 5 April 1917, and served in Dunkirk from later the same month. Buckell advanced to Chief Petty Officer and was subsequently attached to the Royal Air Force. He was demobilised in March 1919.
