M.C.
London Gazette 1 January 1917.

The Recommendation states: ‘For conspicuous devotion to duty since the commencement of the war. During the period he has carried out his duties (frequently under the most adverse conditions) in a most efficient manner, and has never failed to justify the reliance placed in him.’

Samuel Brocklehurst was born on 24 April 1874, and attested for the King’s Own Scottish Borderers in May 1895, joining the 2nd Battalion at Rawalpindi later that year. He was promoted Corporal in 1898, Lance-Sergeant in 1901, and Sergeant in 1902. He was appointed Quartermaster Sergeant in 1913, and was awarded his long Service and Good Conduct Medal that same year.

Brocklehurst served during the Great War on the Western Front from 13 August 1914, and was appointed Quartermaster with the honorary rank of Lieutenant on 19 September 1914. Promoted Captain on 19 September 1917, he proceeded to Italy on 11 December 1917, but returned to the Western Front on 4 April 1918. For his conspicuous services during the war he was awarded the Military Cross. Captain Brocklehurst died in the Sheffield Royal Hospital on 31 March 1926, aged 51 years, having been invalided home from his regiment stationed at Cairo suffering from malaria.
