M.M. London Gazette 14 January 1918.

Ernest Goulding was born in Lincoln in 1890. After the outbreak of the Great War he enlisted in the 7th (Service) Battalion, Lincolnshire Regiment, with which he served in France from 14 July 1915. The London Gazette carrying the announcement of his M.M. together with the Schedule Number indicates an award for Ypres in October 1917, very likely the First Battle of Passchendaele where, on 12 October 1917, the 7th Battalion successfully advanced under a creeping barrage to capture Taube Farm, sustaining heavy casualties. The 7th Battalion were also briefly involved in the Second Battle of Passchendaele where they were in the line in the Brombeek Area between 27 October 1917 and 30 October 1917. They saw no other front line action in this period.
