A good Second War 1943 ‘North Africa’ M.M. group of five awarded to Private R. N. G. Lingham, Royal West Kent Regiment, who was originally recommended for a D.C.M. for his gallantry during the attack on Longstop Hill, 24 April 1943, and was subsequently killed in action in Italy on 16 November 1943

M.M. London Gazette 8 July 1943:
‘In recognition of gallant and distinguished services in North Africa’.

The Recommendation, initially for a D.C.M., states: ‘Private Lingham commanded a Section during the attack on Longstop Hill on 24 April 1943. On nearing the foot of the hill, at a small village called Chaibine, this section, who were leading the advance, met an enemy strong point consisting of 5 machine guns. In spite of murderous enemy fire he led his section immediately into the attack, and it was only after the whole of the section had been killed or wounded and a barbed wire entanglement met that he gave up his attempts on the post. Then he personally dragged clear a number of his wounded colleagues and sent them back to the Regimental Aid Post. In the later stages of the attack, in spite of heavy and accurate shell fire, he continued to be a magnificent example to all members of his Company.’

Ronald Norman Gustave Lingham attested for the Royal West Kent Regiment, and served with the 6th Battalion in North Africa, where he distinguished himself at the Battle of Longstop Hill. He subsequently served with the Battalion in Italy, and was killed in action at the Sangro River on 16 November 1943. He is buried in the Sangro River War Cemetery, Italy.
