Military General Service 1793-1814, 1 clasp, Vittoria (Robt. Wheatley, 40th Foot) dark toned, extremely fine £1,000-£1,200

Provenance: R. Ford sale 1884; Sotheby, February 1886; Whitaker Collection 1890.

Only nine single clasps for Vittoria to the 40th.

Robert Wheatley was born in the Parish of Pavenham, Bedfordshire, and enlisted into the 40th Foot at Arundel, Kent (sic), on 2 May 1811. He was discharged on 15 June 1824, aged 31, in consequence of ‘great enlargement of the tonsils of long standing.’ He ‘served in the Peninsula, North America and at Waterloo,’ where he was in Captain Ellis’s Company. He died on 28 January 1873.
