Charles Howarth attested for the Manchester Regiment, and served with the 5th Battalion during the Great War in the Egyptian theatre of War from 21 September 1914. He subsequently transferred to the 1st/8th Battalion, Middlesex Regiment, and was awarded his Territorial Force Efficiency Medal on 1 August 1920.
