India General Service 1854-95, 1 clasp, Jowaki 1877-8 (901. Pte. John Ballinger, 2/9 Ft.) minor edge nicks, nearly extremely fine £160-£200

John Ballinger was born in Worcester in 185, and attested for the 31st Brigade at Westminster on 18 October 1872. Posted to the 9th (Norfolk) regiment of foot, he served with the 2nd Battalion in India from 8 February 1875 to 16 March 1889, and saw action as part of Brigadier-General Ross’s force (Peshawar Column) in the campaign against the Jowaki Afridis, 1877-78, and during the Second Afghan War (entitled to medal with clasp Kabul). He was promoted Corporal on 25 August 1883, and Sergeant on 22 May 1887, and was discharged at Norwich on 25 October 1889, after 17 years and 8 days’ service.
