Army L.S. & G.C., V.R., 3rd issue, small letter reverse (1541 Lance Serjt. Patk. Wheelahan 2nd. Battn. 8th. Foot.) edge bruising, nearly very fine £70-£90

Patrick Wheelahan was born in Raheenmore, Tyrrellspass, West Meath, in 1827 and attested for the 54th Regiment of Foot at Frankford on 5 December 1844. He transferred to the 28th Regiment of Foot on 1 August 1845, in order to serve alongside his elder brother, and then to the 86th Regiment of Foot on 1 August 1848. He was promoted Corporal on 5 June 1860, before transferring to the 2nd Battalion, 8th Regiment of Foot on 30 September 1866. He was awarded his Long Service and Good Conduct Medal, together with a gratuity of £5, on 9 April 1867, and transferred to the Permanent Staff of the Clare Militia in the same month.
