Alfred William John Nicholson was born in Devonport, Devon in January 1907. He joined the Royal Navy as a Writer in June 1925, and advanced to Leading Writer in June 1929. Subsequent service included with H.M. Ships Emperor of India and Queen Elizabeth.

Nicholson advanced to Chief Petty Officer Writer in June 1935, and was serving with H.M.S.
Londonderry at the outbreak of the Second War. He was awarded the L.S. & G.C. in May 1940, and advanced to Acting Warrant Writer in March 1943. Nicholson served as Warrant Writer Officer on the Staff of the Commander in Chief, British Pacific Fleet towards to the end of the war.

Sold with the following related items and documents: M.I.D. Certificate, with registered envelope addressed to recipient ‘c/o 11 Fredington Grove, Milehouse, Plymouth’; named enclosure for Imperial Service Medal, dated 1 August 1940; embroidered silk scarf with picture of a soldier in centre and the words ‘Present from Gibraltar, God Save The King Emperor’ sewn on it.
