India General Service 1854-95, 1 clasp, Burma 1887-89 (1016 Pte. J. Hatton 2nd. Bn. S. Wales Bord:) pawn-broker’s mark to obverse field, suspension loose, edge bruising, otherwise very fine £100-£140

John Hatton was born in Chalton, near Malmsbury, Wiltshire, in 1865, and attested for the South Wales Borderers in Monmouthshire on 11 February 1884. He deserted on 19 September 1885, but was captured on 23 September 1885, was tried, and sentenced on 14 October to 84 days’ imprisonment for desertion. Released after 56 days, on 9 December 1885, he served with the Regiment in India and Burma from 15 December 1885, and saw action during the Third Anglo-Burmese War. Transferring to the Norfolk Regiment on 30 September 1892, whilst still in India, he returned home on 6 November 1893, and discharged on 13 October 1897, after 12 years’ service.
