Pair: Private E. Eagle, 7th (Service) Battalion, Suffolk Regiment, killed in action on the Western Front, 12 October 1916

Ernest Eagle was the son of Samuel Eagle of The Barracks, Henstead, Wrentham, Suffolk. He served during the Great War with the 7th (Service) Battalion, Suffolk Regiment, and was killed in action on the Western Front, 12 October 1916. On the latter date the Battalion were serving as part of the 35th Brigade, 12th (Eastern) Division on the Somme, ‘with 7th Norfolk and from positions in sunken road leading to Gueudecourt Wood made assault on Bayonet Trench (12/10) - advanced at 2pm under heavy crossfire - held up near German trenches by machine-guns and wire and forced to take cover in shell-holes. Lieutenant-Colonel Murphy notes acts of ‘remarkable bravery’ at this point. Withdrew with over 500 casualties.’ (British Battalions on the Somme, by R. Westlake refers)
