John William Goodchild was the son of Mr and Mrs J. R. Goodchild of Fulham, London, and husband of Ada Goodchild of Sylvia Cottage, Hatchet Lane, Winkfield, Windsor. Goodchild served during the Great War as a Leading Seaman with H.M.S. Hawke. He was killed on 15 October 1914 when the vessel was torpedoed and sunk in the North Sea by the German submarine U.9. The ship, part of the 10th Cruiser Squadron on the Northern Patrol, became a target after she had stopped to take on mail and was sunk off Aberdeen.

Leading Seaman Goodchild was one of the 524 officers who went down with the cruiser, and is commemorated on the Chatham Naval Memorial.
