Arthur William Ellis was born in Plymouth, Devon, and attested for the Royal Field Artillery on 4 December 1915. He served during the Great War overseas in India from 7 October 1917 to 29 September 1918, before proceeding to the Western Front on the latter date and serving there until the cessation of hostilities.
