Edgar Haynes was born in Dudley, Staffordshire, on 1 October 1890, and enlisted in the Royal Marines at Birmingham on 19 January 1915. He served during the Great War with the Mediterranean Expeditionary Force from 1 March 1915, and was hospitalised on 6 September 1915, being admitted to the 26th Clearing Hospital. Recovering, he subsequently served on the Western Front from 21 May 1916, and was demobilised on 22 March 1919.
