Alexander Pedden was born at Glasgow, Lanark, and attested there for the 78th Highlanders on 7 November 1842, aged 18, a labourer by trade. When discharged at Shorncliffe on 7 April 1863, he was ‘in possession of 5 Good Conduct Badges and the Medal & Gratuity for long service and good conduct - he served in the Persian Campaign of 1857 (Medal) and Indian Campaign of 1857 and 1858 (Medal and 2 clasps). He was wounded in Lucknow on the 26th Septr. 1857 (Contusion by round shot).’
