Henry Rawden was born in Sleaford, Lincolnshire. A Groom by occupation, he attested for the Lincolnshire Regiment in 1893, aged 19 years, 1 month. With the regiment he served in Malta, February 1895-February 1897 and Egypt and Sudan, February 1897-October 1898. In the latter country he served in the Nile Expedition of 1898 and was present at the battle of the Atbara, 8 April 1898, for which he was awarded the Queen’s Sudan Medal and Khedive’s Sudan Medal with one clasp. He then served in India, October 1898-February 1902, transferring to the Royal West Kent Regiment in December 1900. After further service in Malta, April 1904-March 1907, he was posted home. He was awarded the Long Service medal with a gratuity of £5 in April 1912 and was discharged at his own request on 28 January 1914. Sold with copied service papers and extract from rolls. The scarce single clasp ‘The Atbara’ confirmed.
