Royal Humane Society, small bronze medal (successful) (Sub Constable Roughan. Royal Irish Constabulary. 2 July 1882.) with integral top riband buckle, good very fine £180-£220

R.H.S. Case no. 21,693.

‘On Sunday evening a child named Catherine Galbraith was gallantly rescued from drowning by Sub-Constable Roughan. He and Sub-Constable McLoughlin were walking along the bank of the canal near the Shamble bridge at about 7 o’clock when the little girl, who had been at play with a companion, fell into the water. To his credit it is said that he did not hesitate to enter the water without divesting himself of any part of his clothing, and on receiving a helping hand from Sub-Constble McLoughlin, the child was soon brought to
terra firma.’ (article in The Northern Standard, Monaghan, 8 July 1882 refers).
