Carl Edward Richards was born in Wimborne, Dorset, on 11 August 1893, and was educated at Marlborough College. He was commissioned Second Lieutenant in the 4th Battalion, Dorset Regiment (Territorial Force) on 15 March 1911, and was promoted Lieutenant on 16 May 1912. He served with the 1st/4th Battalion during the Great War in Mesopotamia from 25 February 1916, was wounded, and was promoted Captain on 1 June 1916. He was present at the Battle of Ramadi on 28 September 1917, and then accompanied the famous ‘Dunsterforce’ to the Caspian. Following the cessation of hostilities, he served as Commanding Officer of ‘D’ Company, 4th Battalion, at Wimborne, before relinquishing his commission, with the rank of Major, on 31 March 1925. He died on 13 January 1970.
