Cornfoot. 28.2.1951) small area of erasure before naming; Italy, Kingdom, Messina Earthquake Medal 1908, silver, unnamed as issued, mounted as worn, the MSM loose; together with the recipient’s Worshipful Company of Musicians of London Medallion, 55mm, silver (Herbert George Cornfoot R.M.); together with the related small medal for wear, 24mm, silver, with top silver riband bar, both housed in a fitted case of issue, the lid embossed ‘Presented to Herbert George Cornfoot, R.M. by the Worshipful Company of Musicians 25 October 1910.’, light contact marks, generally very fine, the MSM scarce (8) £500-£700
Herbert George Cornfoot was born on 10 July 1881, and attested for the Royal Marine, serving as a Bandmaster at the Royal Naval School of Music. He saw active service in H.M.S. Duncan during the 1908 Messina Earthquake rescue operations, and in 1910 was selected as Bandmaster to accompany the Duke of Connaught on his visit to South Africa.
