Provenance: purchased from Tony Mullen in 1988 and formerly in the collections of James Barker who purchased it from Baldwins, and Jack Wadey who sold it in 1957.

Joseph Ross enlisted into the 8th Hussars (Dragoons) at Edinburgh on 3 May 1852, a farrier by trade, and landed in the Crimea on 18 July 1854. He was severely wounded in the charge on 25 October 1854, and died of his wounds at Scutari on 8 November 1854.
